Moving Tips

Make a list

There is a lot more to moving just than moving. Transferring utilities and changing mailing address are just a couple tasks that have to be done as well. Make a list so you don't forget something.

Moving Dos and Don'ts

Dos

  • If you have time before your move, consider packing a few boxes a day. Trying to pack everything the day before the move is exhausting. (and you still have to unpack once you get into your new home)

  • Keep a few clothing and personal hygiene items unpacked. Take them to your new house so you're not scrambling and rummaging through boxes looking for toilet paper.

  • Take your move as an opportunity to eliminate some unneeded items.

  • Empty and defrost your refrigerator at least one day in advance to avoid a stinky mess at your new place.

  • Keep important documents with you. Birth certificates, vehicle titles, moving contract, recent bank statements, closing papers, etc. are all best kept in an accessible location.

Don'ts

  • Pack your closets. Wardrobe boxes are a great alternative. Your clothes go on hangers directly into the box, and then out of the box onto the closet rack. (and you don't have to iron them all at your new house)

(**Wardrobe boxes aren't just for clothes. They can be used for blankets, comforters, large amounts of shoes, etc.)

  • Over-stuff boxes. Be aware when packing that things can get heavy quickly. Boxes should ideally weigh less than fifty pounds. Pack heavier items on bottom. Use small boxes for books.

  • Please be aware there are items moving companies are not allowed to transport.
Hazardous materials such as explosives, compressed gases, flammable liquids and solids, oxidizers, poisons, corrosives and radioactive materials are not allowed for transport.
